Small Business Owner & Industry Leader

Tommy Thompson was born in Kentucky and has lived and worked most of his life in Daviess County. He grew up surrounded by a family and community he loves and attended Owensboro High School.
A born entrepreneur, Tommy Thompson serves as president of Thompson Homes, Inc. in Owensboro, Kentucky and served as president of the National Association of Home Builders in 1994. The National Association of Home Builders is based in Washington, D.C. and is the nation’s second largest trade association with over 240,000 member firms.
Currently Thompson is serving in his fifth term in the Kentucky House of Representatives, District 14. He serves as the Majority Whip in House Leadership and is chairman of the House Budget Review Sub-Committee on Education, which is responsible for approximately 50% of the state budget. He is also past chairman of the House Banking and Insurance and also currently serves on that committee. And he served as past chairman of the Program Review and Investigations Committee.
Tommy Thompson also serves on the State Government, Economic Development, Banking and Insurance and Rules Committees.
He received the Mayor’s Award for Excellence and has been inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame and the State of Kentucky Housing Hall of Fame.
Strong Business Means Jobs
Representative Tommy Thompson has been an “outside of the box thinker” since arriving in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 2003. A well-known Owensboro business and community leader, Thompson has worked on a number of issues that has improved the quality of life for those in Ohio and Daviess Counties and for those throughout the Commonwealth.
Serving on the House Banking & Insurance Committee, Representative Thompson has used his business background and experience to help shepherd small business legislation through the legislative process.
The National Federation of Independent Business described Representative Thompson as a champion for small business and that he has consistently “fought daily to protect the bottom line of small business in House District 14.”
Tommy Thompson is focused on job creation and believes that by strengthening small business, they will grow and add employees. He focuses on keeping tax burdens low for Kentucky businesses so they can grow and add revenue to the state’s bottom line to fund quality education for its citizens.
Fighting for Affordable Health Care
Representative Thompson, being a small business owner of Thompson Homes, understands the difficulty companies with fewer than 25 employees have providing health insurance for their workers. He supported the ICARE program to allow small companies to receive vouchers to help defray the cost of insurance premiums for their employees. The goal of the program was to reduce the number of uninsured Kentuckians while allowing more small businesses to provide health insurance to their employees.
Family and Community
Married to his wife Judi for 37 years, they are the proud parents of Nick, Wes and Hunter. Tommy and Judi attend St. Stephens Catholic Church and Tommy serves on the Board of Trustees for Brescia College in Owensboro. Tommy has also been a strong and consistent defender of traditional family values.
